Arcachon's neighborhoods: three atmospheres to discover around Villa Madelon

Arcachon has a unique organization: the city is historically divided into several districts called “cities”, each with its own identity, architecture and atmosphere.

Between 19th-century villas, family beaches, ports and pine forests, these districts tell the story of the seaside resort and offer visitors a wide variety of experiences.

Located east of Arcachon train station , Villa Madelon sits at the crossroads of the Summer Town, the Winter Town, and the Autumn Town . This central location makes it easy to discover the different facets of Arcachon on foot or by bicycle.

The Winter Town: Arcachon's historic and architectural district

Perched on the heights of the city, the Winter Town is one of Arcachon's most emblematic districts. Created in the 19th century to accommodate winter visitors who came to enjoy the mild climate of the bay, it is now famous for its magnificent eclectic villas surrounded by pine trees.

Walking through this neighborhood reveals a unique architecture blending neo-Gothic, oriental, and colonial styles. The shaded alleyways, staircases, and gardens give the area a very special atmosphere.

Our favorite spots in the Winter City

  • The Moorish Park, a veritable hanging garden above the city, is perfect for a peaceful stroll under the pine trees.

  • The Sainte-Cécile Observatory, accessible via a metal footbridge, offers a superb panorama of Arcachon and the basin.

  • A stroll through the streets around Avenue Victor Hugo, where you can discover some of the most beautiful historic villas in the city.

The Summer City: the lively heart of Arcachon

Located around the seafront, the Summer Town forms the vibrant center of Arcachon. This is where most of the shops, restaurants and tourist activities are concentrated.

The neighborhood is organized around several iconic locations:

  • Arcachon's central beach, very popular with families

  • Thiers pier, departure point for boats to Cap Ferret or Île aux Oiseaux

  • the Arcachon market, renowned for its local produce

  • the shopping streets are lively all year round

Our favorite spots in the Summer City

  • The covered market in Arcachon is ideal for discovering local specialties of the bay.

  • A stroll at the end of the day on the Thiers pier, particularly pleasant at sunset.

  • Oyster and seafood tastings in restaurants near the seafront.

The Autumn City: the port and maritime life district

Further south, the Autumn City is oriented towards the port and maritime activities. This district has a more authentic and local atmosphere.

It includes, among other things:

  • the fishing port of Arcachon

  • the marina

  • the shipyards

  • oyster huts

This is where you can most feel the historical relationship between Arcachon and the basin.

Our favorite spots in the Autumn City

  • A walk along the port of Arcachon, to observe the fishing boats and maritime activity.

  • Discover the oyster huts, where you can taste oysters directly facing the basin.

  • Bike rides along the coast towards La Teste-de-Buch and the villages of the basin.

The Spring City: beaches and nature facing the bay

Located west of the city centre, Ville de Printemps is one of the most pleasant areas of Arcachon to enjoy the bay in a natural and residential setting.

Created at the end of the 19th century, this district is distinguished by its large villas surrounded by gardens, its pine-lined avenues, and its more peaceful atmosphere than the city center. It is also one of the most popular areas for its direct access to the beaches.

The Spring Town is particularly known for Pereire Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Arcachon. With its long stretch of sand, cycle paths and open view of Cap Ferret, it is an ideal place for walks, water sports or family days out.

Our favorite spots in the City of Spring

  • Pereire beach, perfect for swimming and long walks along the bay.

  • The coastal cycle path, which allows easy access to the centre of Arcachon or the beaches of the bay.

  • A walk in the Abatilles district, known for its residential setting, villas and famous mineral water spring.

Villa Madelon: between Summer City, Winter City and Autumn City

One of the great advantages of Villa Madelon is its particularly privileged location in Arcachon.

Located east of the train station, the villa provides easy access to several iconic parts of the city:

  • the villas and promenades of the Winter Town

  • the beaches and the lively atmosphere of the Summer City

  • the maritime atmosphere of the Autumn City

This central location allows you to fully enjoy Arcachon without needing to take the car, whether for an architectural walk, a swim in the bay or an oyster tasting by the sea.

Staying at Villa Madelon thus offers an excellent balance between residential calm and quick access to the main living areas of the resort .
