Activities in Arcachon
Living in Arcachon means learning to love the Bay in its many faces: calm out of season, bright in summer, wild at sunrise, friendly at sunset.
When you stay at Villa Madelon, we not only want to offer you a comfortable place, but to help you experience the Bassin as we love it, with its great classics and its more confidential little gems.
Here are our activity ideas, habits and favorite places to put together a balanced stay combining relaxation, nature, gourmet food and discoveries.

The beaches of the Arcachon Basin
One of the great assets of the Arcachon Basin is the variety of its beaches. Unlike ocean beaches, which are often more sporty, the beaches on the Basin side offer calm, shallow waters ideal for swimming, especially with children.
From Villa Madelon, you have easy access to the beaches of Aiguillon, Pereire, Moulleau or even Arcachon town centre. Each has its own atmosphere: family-friendly, lively, wilder or more secluded.
Geraldine's favorite:
Eyrac beach, located a 10-minute walk away, is less crowded than the central beaches and is perfect for a quiet morning or a late afternoon in the sun.
Our advice:
Opt for the beaches in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and there are fewer people. It's also the best time to enjoy the peace and colors of the Arcachon Basin.
In summer, remember to bring parasols, hats and water, even if the sea breeze makes the heat more bearable.

Winter Town & Belvedere: the soul of Arcachon
The Winter Town is one of Arcachon's most iconic districts. Here you'll discover magnificent 19th-century villas, each with its own style, nestled among the pine trees.
The climb up to the viewpoint offers a superb view of the Bassin.
Geraldine's advice:
Guided tours organised by the Tourist Office, on foot or by miniature train, to understand the history of Arcachon and the origin of its districts.

Summer Town, Market & Moorish Park
On the Ville d'Été side, the atmosphere is more lively. The market is ideal for stocking up on fresh, local produce.
After the market, we like to go back up via the Parc Mauresque elevator to reach the park, a true green lung above the city.
Good to know =:
The park has a large children's play area, perfect for a family break.

The Dune of Pilat, a must-see
A visit to the region wouldn't be complete without climbing the Dune du Pilat, the highest sand dune in Europe. The panorama, between the Atlantic Ocean, the Landes forest and the Banc d'Arguin sandbar, is simply spectacular.
Marc's advice:
If possible, avoid the main staircase, which is often very crowded. Between the Dune campsite and the Forest campsite, a path leads to the dune on foot. The climb is a bit more strenuous, but much more pleasant, and reaching the top is all the more rewarding.
Another option: cycle to the Corniche and go down the stairs to have a picnic on the beach and then go up and down the dune.
Best moments:
- Early morning for peace and quiet
- At the end of the day to admire the sunset
Take the time to walk along the ridge, descend towards the ocean, and watch the paragliders when conditions are right.

Oyster huts and oyster farming villages
The Arcachon Basin is intimately linked to oyster farming. Exploring its oyster ports is to discover an authentic facet of the territory.
We particularly enjoy strolling around the ports of La Teste-de-Buch, Gujan-Mestras or Cap Ferret.
The colorful huts, often transformed into small restaurants or tasting rooms, offer oysters, shrimp, whelks, fish pâtés and white wine, facing the water.
An address we like:
All the oyster huts in the small port of La Teste that we can reach in 5 minutes by bike
Our advice:
Opt for tastings in the late afternoon, when the light is softer and the atmosphere is particularly pleasant.

Cycle paths & soft mobility
The Arcachon Basin has a remarkable network of cycle paths, mostly flat and safe, allowing easy travel between beaches, neighborhoods and forests.
From Arcachon, you can reach Le Moulleau, Pyla-sur-Mer, La Teste or even walk along the beaches on the Bassin side.
Marc's favorite route;
From Aiguillon to Moulleau, along the sea, the beaches and the superb houses on the front line.
Recommended gourmet break:
- Ice creams at Aux Délices Glacés (blood orange, pink grapefruit, dark chocolate)
- Or canelés at Guignard's
Cycling remains, in our opinion, one of the best ways to discover the area at your own pace. That's why we have 5 adult bikes and 2 children's bikes available for your use.

Pinasse tour & discovery from the water
The pinasse is the traditional boat of the Bassin. Embarking on board allows you to discover the landscapes from another angle: the Île aux Oiseaux, the famous stilted cabins, the oyster beds and the coastal villages.
Several providers offer guided or private excursions, for half a day or at sunset.
Our advice:
Opt for an outing in the late afternoon: the low light enhances the landscapes and creates a very special atmosphere.
This is an experience we highly recommend to understand the identity of the Basin.

Cap Ferret: village spirit and ocean
Crossing the Bay by boat to reach Cap Ferret is one of the iconic experiences.
Once there, the little train allows you to reach the ocean, enjoy the waves, then return to the Bassin side for a tasting or a walk in the oyster farming villages.
Favorite treat:
The famous white dunes from Pascal Lucas. You can also find them in downtown Arcachon.

Banc d'Arguin: white sand and turquoise water
Accessible by boat from the Arcachon or Moulleau jetty, the Banc d'Arguin is an immense sandbar classified as a nature reserve, located between the Bassin and the ocean.
People come here to swim, relax on the sand, watch the boats at anchor and enjoy a unique feeling of space.
Our advice:
Pack a picnic and head out mid-morning to enjoy the site before the crowds arrive. At low tide, some areas are particularly good for swimming.
It's one of the most unique experiences in the Bassin.

Teich Ornithological Reserve
Located about thirty minutes from Arcachon, the Teich bird sanctuary is a true haven of peace for nature lovers. The site covers more than 110 hectares and is home to hundreds of bird species throughout the year.
The route, flat and well laid out, allows you to walk between marshes, lagoons and wooden observation points, without disturbing the wildlife.
Geraldine's favorite:
Go in the morning or at the very end of the day, when the birds are most active and the light is magnificent.
Good to know:
In the immediate vicinity, a small pond allows for swimming on sunny days, perfect for combining a nature walk and a relaxing moment.

Canoeing down the Leyre
The Leyre, nicknamed "the little Amazon", meanders through the heart of lush forests between the Landes and the Bassin.
The canoe trip is accessible to everyone, without any particular difficulty. You glide slowly on the water, surrounded by greenery, with the chance to sometimes spot herons, kingfishers or turtles.
Our advice:
Allow half a day, including a picnic. Several bases offer routes adapted to your level and available time.
It's one of the most unique experiences in the region.

Salt meadows of La Teste-de-Buch
The salt marshes constitute a protected natural area, composed of marshes, channels and paths, between La Teste and the Bassin.
People come here to walk, run or cycle, away from the hustle and bustle, amidst typical vegetation.
Marc's favorite:
End the walk with an oyster tasting in a small oyster port, with a glass of white wine overlooking the Bassin.
A perfect place to experience the local soul.

Surfing & ocean beaches
For those who love waves and wide open spaces, head to the ocean coast, near La Salie or Biscarrosse.
The beaches there are wilder, wider, and ideal for surfing, bodyboarding or simply admiring the ocean.
Many schools offer courses for all levels, for children as well as adults.
Our advice:
Even without surfing, a stroll on these beaches at the end of the day is well worth the trip.

Bordeaux & vineyards
About an hour's drive away, Bordeaux offers a very nice urban getaway: quays, historic centre, museums, restaurants and wine bars.
Wine lovers can also organize a day in the Médoc, Saint-Émilion or Graves, to visit estates and taste the great wines of the region.
