Arcachon without a car: routes, bikes and best practices

The Arcachon Basin is one of the easiest destinations on the French coast to explore without a car. Between cycle paths, ferry services, and reasonable distances between iconic sites, it's perfectly possible to organize a complete stay using sustainable transportation.

Over the years and through our stays in the Arcachon Basin, we've noticed that many travelers rediscover the region when they explore it by bike or on foot. The landscapes are savored differently, journeys become leisurely strolls, and one takes the time to truly appreciate the area.

Here are our tips and favorite routes for exploring Arcachon and its surroundings without a car.

Why explore Arcachon without a car?

The Arcachon Basin is particularly well-suited to slow travel. The terrain is almost entirely flat and an extensive network of cycle paths connects Arcachon to the main destinations in the Basin.

Traveling without a car also avoids parking difficulties, especially in high season, and allows you to enjoy the landscapes between the ocean, pine forests and oyster farming villages more.

It is also a more relaxed way to discover the region: you stop more easily, you take secondary roads and you experience more of the rhythm of the Basin.

The most beautiful bike rides around Arcachon

Arcachon – Le Moulleau

This ride is one of the most pleasant to do by bike. The cycle path runs along the Bassin and crosses elegant residential areas, dotted with typical Arcachon villas.

The journey takes approximately fifteen to twenty minutes and is perfectly suited for families.

Upon arriving in Le Moulleau, you can enjoy the beach, a coffee on a terrace or a walk to the pier.

Marc & Géraldine's tip: at the end of the day, the light on the Bassin is superb and the atmosphere becomes particularly soft.

Arcachon – Dune du Pilat

The Dune du Pilat is one of the region's must-see sites. It can be easily reached by bike from Arcachon via the cycle path that crosses the pine forest.

The journey takes approximately thirty to forty minutes depending on your pace.

Once there, you can leave your bike at the entrance and walk up to enjoy the spectacular panorama of the ocean, the Banc d'Arguin and the Landes forest.

Marc & Géraldine's tip: opt for the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and heat.

Explore the Bassin by bike

For those who enjoy long rides, several sections of the Basin can be explored by bike in a day.

The routes between Arcachon, La Teste-de-Buch and Gujan-Mestras are particularly pleasant, alternating between cycle paths in the forest and passages along the Bassin.

It is not necessary to do the entire tour of the Basin to enjoy it: choosing a section and taking the time to stop in the villages is often the best approach.

Alternative transportation options: trains and ferry services

The train makes it very easy to reach Arcachon from Bordeaux. The station is located right in the city center, allowing you to start your stay immediately on foot or by bike.

Once there, ferry shuttles allow you to cross the Bay and reach places like Cap Ferret. It's a pleasant alternative to driving, and it also offers a beautiful view of the Bay.

Best practices for getting around without a car

To fully enjoy the Arcachon Basin using sustainable transportation, a few simple habits make all the difference.

Opt for early morning or late afternoon rides during the summer. Always carry water, sunscreen, and a lock for your bike. Respect shared pedestrian areas and adjust your speed in busy areas.

These few simple habits allow you to fully enjoy the network of cycle paths while travelling with peace of mind.

Our experience of the car-free Bassin

Many of the travelers we welcome choose to leave their car behind during their stay. Their return is almost always the same: they discover the Arcachon Basin in a different way.

Journeys become moments of pleasure, villages can be visited more peacefully and one can enjoy the landscapes more.

This is often a very pleasant surprise for those who hadn't initially considered this option.

Staying at Villa Madelon without a car

Villa Madelon is particularly well suited to a car-free holiday. It is located just a few minutes' walk from Arcachon train station, making it easy to arrive by train from Bordeaux or other major cities.

To make getting around easier, several bicycles are available so you can discover the Arcachon Basin in a gentle and carbon-neutral way. In our opinion, this is one of the best ways to explore the region, while taking the time to enjoy the scenery.

Staying at Villa Madelon means choosing an ideal starting point to discover Arcachon and the Bassin in a different way, favouring a calmer pace and more respectful of the environment.
